A house rewire is one of the most significant home improvements you can undertake. It transforms your property's safety, capacity, and functionality. But it is also disruptive — walls are chased, floorboards are lifted, and power is off for periods of time. At ELECSI, we have rewired hundreds of homes across Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds, Woodbridge, and all of Suffolk. Here is our practical guide to preparing your home and family for a smooth rewire.
Step 1: Understand the Schedule
Before work begins, we provide a detailed day-by-day schedule. A typical 3-bedroom house rewire takes 5–10 working days: days 1–3 for first fix (cables), days 4–5 for plaster repair, and days 6–8 for second fix (sockets, switches, fittings). For occupied properties, we work room by room, keeping at least one living area and one bathroom functional throughout. Understanding the schedule helps you plan around the most disruptive phases.
Step 2: Clear Rooms and Protect Belongings
Remove all furniture, pictures, and fragile items from rooms being rewired. First fix involves chasing walls, lifting floorboards, and drilling — all of which create dust and vibration. If you cannot remove furniture, we will cover it with dust sheets, but clearing the room is always better. Wall-mounted TVs, shelves, and cabinets must come down. We can coordinate with a handyman if you need assistance with heavy items.
Step 3: Plan for No Power
Power will be off for 3–5 hours per day during first fix, and for the full day during consumer unit replacement. Plan accordingly: charge phones and laptops in advance, have torches and battery lanterns ready, and consider using a camping stove for kettle and microwave needs. If you work from home, plan to work elsewhere on the days your office is being rewired. For families with young children, staying with relatives for 2–3 days during the most disruptive phase is often the best approach.
Step 4: Decide on Your Specification
Before work begins, we hold a specification meeting where you choose: socket positions (we recommend at least 6 per room in living areas), switch heights and locations, lighting positions and types, USB socket locations, outdoor socket positions, EV charger provision, and smart home cabling. Making these decisions in advance prevents delays during the rewire. We provide a floor plan marking every position for your approval.
Step 5: Arrange Plastering
First fix requires chasing walls to install cables. These channels must be filled and made good before second fix. We can recommend trusted plasterers or coordinate with your own builder. The plastering typically takes 1–2 days and needs 24–48 hours to dry before second fix begins. Schedule this in advance — waiting for a plasterer can add days to the project.
Step 6: Plan for Pets
Pets are particularly stressed by the noise, dust, and unfamiliar people in their home. Dogs should be walked before work begins and kept in a quiet room away from the work area. Cats may need to be kept in a secure room or temporarily relocated. If you have caged pets like birds or reptiles that need heating, arrange an alternative heat source for days when power is off. Inform our team about any pets so we can plan accordingly.
Step 7: Secure Valuables
While ELECSI's team is fully vetted and insured, we recommend securing jewellery, cash, and small valuables during the rewire. Our electricians need access to all rooms including bedrooms, so a locked safe or temporary storage off-site is sensible. We also recommend photographing the condition of walls, floors, and ceilings before work begins as a reference point.
Step 8: Communicate with Neighbours
Rewiring involves drilling, hammering, and occasional loud noise. If you live in a terraced or semi-detached property, let your neighbours know the schedule. Most rewire work is internal and should not affect neighbours directly, but courtesy goes a long way. For apartments, coordinate with your management company and ensure access to communal areas and the main distribution board is arranged.
Step 9: Arrange Post-Rewire Cleaning
Even with dust sheets and careful work, rewiring generates significant dust. Plan for a thorough clean after the project is complete — professional cleaning services are available and worth the investment. Alternatively, allow a full day for DIY cleaning. Do not attempt to clean while work is ongoing — the dust will return immediately.
Step 10: Enjoy Your New Electrics
Once the rewire is complete and certified, you have a modern, safe installation that will serve your home for 50+ years. You can now safely add modern appliances, EV chargers, solar panels, and smart home technology. Your property value has increased, your insurance is more secure, and your family is safer. The disruption is temporary — the benefits are permanent.
