LED Lighting Upgrades: The Fastest Way to Cut Bills

Lighting accounts for roughly 15% of a typical UK household's electricity bill. For older Suffolk homes still using halogen downlights or incandescent bulbs, switching to LED is the single fastest payback energy improvement you can make — often under 12 months.

The Numbers

A 50W halogen downlight replaced with a 5W LED saves 45W per bulb. In a kitchen with 8 downlights running 4 hours daily, that is a saving of 1.44 kWh per day — roughly £180 per year at current prices. A whole-house retrofit of 30 bulbs saves £500–£700 annually.

Choosing the Right Colour Temperature

LEDs come in warm white (2700K), neutral white (4000K), and cool white (6000K+). For living rooms and bedrooms, we recommend 2700K — warm and cosy. For kitchens, bathrooms and home offices, 4000K is clearer and more practical. Cool white above 5000K can feel clinical in domestic settings and is best reserved for workshops or garages.

Dimmer Compatibility

Not all LEDs work with existing dimmer switches. Old leading-edge dimmers designed for halogen loads often cause flickering, buzzing or premature LED failure. When upgrading to LED, we recommend replacing trailing-edge dimmers rated for LED loads — these provide smooth, silent dimming from 1% to 100%. Recessed Downlights and Fire Rating

In ceilings with habitable rooms above, recessed downlights must be fire-rated to maintain the ceiling's 30 or 60-minute fire barrier. Non-fire-rated fittings create dangerous gaps. We only install fire-rated LED downlights with intumescent seals, ensuring your upgrade meets building regulations.

Smart Lighting Options

Philips Hue, LIFX and similar systems offer app-controlled colour-changing LEDs. While fun, the hardware cost is high (£30–£50 per bulb). For most Suffolk homes, quality fixed-colour LEDs with smart dimmer switches provide 90% of the benefit at a fraction of the cost. We can install smart switches that integrate with Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit.

Outdoor LED Security Lighting

PIR-activated LED floodlights with 2,000–3,000 lumen output and 50,000-hour lifespan are now affordable at £40–£80 fitted. We recommend units with IP65 rating for Suffolk's coastal weather, and warm white (3000K) for less light pollution in rural areas.
